Do you TEND to TOIL, or TOIL to TEND?

You may have read the story written in the book of Genesis, about how (“in the beginning”) God gave Adam and Eve stewardship to take care of the Garden. What a gift! The entire known world was suddenly theirs, and all they were required to do was—TEND it!  However, turns out they were perfect examples of most of us human beings; if a gift comes too easy, we tend not to appreciate it. In Adam and Eve’s case, their simple stewardship was to just “tend” the garden, not work themselves to death.

You may be thinking, “OK, Philip, don’t get religious on me!” Well, I won’t, and I’m not—but I believe this story has a broader application, if you will indulge me for a few minutes.

Most business owners and managers tend to toil. In other words, they spend most of their time working long hours, putting out fires, dealing with recurring mistakes; meeting over and over with employees to keep everyone on the same page, and all the while, constantly being interrupted by those looking for information so they can do their jobs. God called it “the curse”—others call it “business as usual.” You might even call it “toiling for dollars!”  In my book, I call these frustrations—System Busters!

Now, let’s look a little further into our garden story to understand why God was able to tell Adam and Eve to just “tend” the garden. He had already created a great system to manage most of the garden’s day-to-day issues and upkeep. Some would argue that, since he had created the perfect system, Adam and Eve could just enjoy—even have fun—“tending” the garden, without the constant frustration of pests, drought, and other things that can cause chaos in a garden.

Okay, so let’s replace “tend the garden” with “tend the business.” Truth is—most businesses begin with a less-than-perfect situation, with few if any systems for running day-to-day operations. For most of us who run a business, things tend to go wrong and—for all the dust we might kick up in our “garden”—things tend to get worse! So, we tend to toil and sweat harder with no end in sight, as we try to keep it all under control.

But, what if we spend some of that “toiling” time developing systems that will manage and actually stop most of the chaos in our business? We could then enjoy and, yes, “have fun” tending our business.

With the right systems in place, your business, like a well-kept garden, would only need a little pruning here and there, maybe a new plant or two, and then—watch it grow!

I say, let us “toil” so that all we have to do is “tend!”

Amen?
